Gareth Arnison brace helps Workington Reds to comfortable win

Workington Reds eased to a comfortable 4-0 win over Whitehaven Amateurs but afterwards boss Darren Edmondson cut winger Rico Colulo from his squad.

Colulo’s spell at Borough Park was brought to an abrupt end when he was replaced by Shaun Vipond at half time during the impressive performance.

The fleet-of-foot wide boy is the first man to be culled in a bid to balance the books at Borough Park.

Edmondson witnessed his side stroll to victory with a five star first half showing.

Goal ace Gareth Arnison capped off a man of the match display with two strikes. With just 32 seconds on the clock he hit his first with a clever chipped effort.

Gari Rowntree played an inch perfect ball into Arnison’s path, the big striker took it in his stride before lobbing the ball into the net.

Whitehaven almost levelled within three minutes but Kevin Connelly’s audacious overhead kick went just over the bar.

Quick thinking by trialist Matty Tymon set up the second goal on 10 minutes.

His long throw to sent Arnison away down the left. His pull back found Callum Ruttledge, who slid the ball into the corner of the net.

Workington cut through the Amateurs defence at will and had countless chances to extend their lead and made it three on 19 minutes. Tymon turned goal scorer after firing home from close range following a swift passing involving David Hewson, Anthony Wright and Arnison.

The scoring was complete on 32 minutes when Arnison converted a penalty he won.

He was brought down by Stu Shaw inside the box, got up, dusted himself off, and shot low into the corner.

The Amateurs almost found a way back into the match minutes after the restart but keeper Aaran Taylor was quick to smother the danger with Connelly set to strike.

That brief spell of pressure was short lived and Workington continued their dominant display.

Free running Wright came close to a wonder strike but his 30-yard effort was tipped over the bar.

Afterwards, Edmondson said: “I asked the lads to come out of the blocks quicker than they did against Darlington.

“They did that and took the lead within the first minute. That killed off Whitehaven’s spirit.

“Gareth is a good footballer. He has quick feet and knows what to do with the ball.

“He still has areas to improve but if he takes on board the advice he is given then he could play at a higher level.

“At the back we kept it tight and I think Alex White and Andy Langford read the game well.

“It was an all-round good performance. I was pleased with the result and the manner of victory.

“It’s a week of tough training now and by the time Lancaster comes round we will have our first team sorted out.”
