Joe McKenna in Workington Town squad for York Knights game
Last updated at 12:30, Friday, 23 July 2010
Forward Joe McKenna will make a timely return to action for Workington Town this Sunday in their crunch game at York City Knights (ko 3pm).
McKenna has been missing for the past few weeks because of work commitments but he has now been able to return to training and coaches Gary Charlton and Martin Oglanby are delighted to welcome him back.
The return is a big boost to Workington as they will be without Lee Dutton for the next few weeks, again through job problems.
And Ruairi McGoff has returned to Barrow following the end of his loan spell.
Town are still in talks with Barrow over McGoff’s return before the July 31 transfer deadline but at present the prop is injured and out for up to three weeks with knee ligament damage.
“Joe has been working with youngsters but now that schools are off he is available again,” said Charlton.
“He will come back into the squad at a good time as we are losing Dutton and McGoff so we have to number up in the forwards and Joe gives us another number.
“He doesn’t make many mistakes, or drop many balls or miss many tackles and that is just what we want, especially going to York.”
Town will be relying on McKenna, Ryan MacDonald, Kris Coward and Stewart Rhodes to fill the prop berths this weekend as Charlton does not believe they will get any more players in before the end of the season.
And in another blow the club has just learned that half-back Liam Finch is likely to be ruled out for the rest of the year after failing to recover from an ankle injury.
Finch broke a bone in his ankle at work at the start of June and had to wear a cast but it was hoped that the former Barrow star would be back this month.
But after removing the plaster, Finch discovered it had not healed as doctors hoped and it is unlikely he will see any action this season.
