Scotland call-up for Workington Town star Brett Carter

Workington Town flier Brett Carter could be set to make his international debut after earning a call-up to Scotland’s provisional 35-man squad – alongside clubmate Paddy Coupar.
The versatile full-back/winger has impressed Scotland boss Steve McCormack and he could make his debut in this autumn’s European Cup.
Ex-Haven boss McCormack said: “Brett is a good young player and we have got quite an experienced squad that has been around for quite a while and this year we made it a goal to get younger players in and build towards the 2013 World Cup.
“A lot of people speak highly of Brett at Barrow and at Workington so he is at an ideal age and in an ideal position to get called up.
“He is in our provisional list of 35 names and I have spoken to him and he is very keen.”
Carter, who signed for Town from Barrow at the start of the season, is eligible to play for Scotland through his mother, who hails from over the border.
Scotland’s European Cup campaign begins on October 9 when they play Wales in Glasgow. A week later they travel to Toulouse to take on France and then play Ireland in Dublin on October 23.
n TOWN’S Championship One rivals Blackpool Panthers were last night docked 10 points by the Rugby League after being found guilty of a number of breaches of Rugby Football League rules.
They now drop from third place in the league table to fifth, joint on points with sixth-placed Town, although the Panthers have a far superior for and against points differential.
Panthers were found guilty of breaking registration and salary cap rules and have stated that they will not appeal the decision of the RFL tribunal.
Town chairman Dave Bowden said: “They are one of the top three teams and the league table doesn’t really lie.
“It’s now going to be tougher because Blackpool have dropped into the first round of play-off games. With four games to play, we can be third or out of them competition. But we haven’t peaked yet – they are three games we could have won and if we had beaten York on Sunday, nobody could have argued.
“In some respects, the decision has disrupted the normal play-off structure.
“But, saying that, the play-offs are going to be fought by very similar teams.”
Town entertain fourth-placed Rochdale on Sunday (3pm ko) and victory for Gary Charlton and Martin Oglanby’s men would strengthen their hold on a play-off place.
