WORKINGTON residents have welcomed news that supermarket giant Asda will be moving to the town’s Dunmail Park retail park.
Asda announced the plans to move to the town last week.
It expects to open before the end of the year, creating up to 350 jobs, and the existing Dixon’s department store will move to the other side of the centre to make way for it.
Residents are relishing the chance of having more competition in the food market.
Ally Tucker, 32, of Devonshire Street, said: “The more competition the cheaper the prices.
“It will be brilliant to have Asda at Dunmail Park. Not only will it give other supermarkets something to think about but there will be more choice too.”
Neil Stewart, 26, of Poole Road, Salterbeck, said: “It will be awesome. Asda have a brilliant range of products. They are much better than Morrisons and Tesco so I think it will be great for the town when they finally open.”
Asda will take over the petrol station on the Maryport Road site and the firm has pledged to keep petrol prices in line with their store in Carlisle.
Sue McAvoy, 46, of Richmond Street, Workington, said: “I think that it is great to have such competition for prices. It can only help the people who are paying for the goods.
“If they do keep the petrol prices the same as Carlisle then it will be the cheapest in the west and that is fantastic news.”
Emma Irving, 24, of Pearl Road, Workington, is looking forward to being able to buy clothes for her children from the company’s George range.
She said: “George do some great children’s clothes and it will be good for all the mums in the area to be able to have some choice.
“Workington has needed a place to buy more children’s clothes and Asda will be the right place.”
Shelley Milligan, 34, of Newlands Lane, Workington, said: “I really like the George range. They do a lot of good clothes and not just for children.
“Asda will be great news for the town and we are all supporting the move.”
Andy Sammons, 23, of Wilson Street, Workington, said: “There are a lot of unemployed people in the town and it is great news that more jobs will be created.
“Asda offers a lot in terms of products so it will be great to have more choice at cheaper prices.”

Have your say
I have not had a bad word said about ASDA coming to town yet - can't say I heard the same about Tesco.
