Thomas delighted with Workington Comets' emphatic victory

Workington Comets eclipsed their previous biggest win of the season on Saturday night by beating Rye House 62-32 in a completely dominant display.

It was the Comets second successive home victory and bettered the 62-33 victory they recorded against Somerset only a week before.

All the Comets riders won at least one race and all scored in paid double figures.

Team manager Ian Thomas was delighted with the win over a team fourth in the league.

He said: “We only had two last places all night, each rider got at least one win and five of the six riders were in double figures with all six in double figures if you add on the bonus points.

“It is the best I can remember a Comets team gating for quite some time and it just about equals the result we had at Somerset but I think Rye House are a better team.

“I think if we had had Peter riding for us we probably would have scored more and we have beaten them quite comfortably on aggregate over the two matches in the league.”

Although all riders were in double figures Thomas singled out American Kenny Ingalls for special praise who was only denied a paid maximum after falling in heat 12 after a collision with Andre Compton.

Ingalls also incredibly managed to keep on his bike in the second heat after his bike lifted up almost vertically but he managed to bring it down and take second place.

Thomas said: “I think Kenny managing to stay on his bike in heat two was worth the entrance money alone. You can’t get a lot better than what he scored and he likes riding around Derwent Park.

“If he hadn’t fallen in heat 12 he would have been in heat 15 but as he did he wasn’t eligible so I decided to put Andre and Craig in so everybody got five rides which I think is only fair.

“He is a very talented rider but he will probably have a few bad meetings as well by the end of the season.”

Thomas admitted they were lucky with the weather but praised the track staff for their work.

He added: “The referee gave us nine out of ten for the track which combined with the nine we got against Somerset and ten against Birmingham is pretty good considering the weather.”
