Princess Jasmine, Aladdin and the Genie are treading the boards on a Workington stage tonight and tomorrow.
Around 40 members of Workington Amateur Operatic Society’s junior section are staging the Disney musical at the Carnegie Theatre, on Finkle Street.
With well-known songs such as A Friend Like Me, A Whole New World, Arabian Nights and Prince Ali, the audience will be transported through time to the city of Agrabah.
There, they will follow Aladdin’s journey from street urchin to prince as he tries to win the hand of Princess Jasmine and avoid the evil Jafar’s plans.
The local youngsters will sing and dance their way through the hits from 7.30pm each night.
The lead role of Aladdin is taken by 15-year-old Daniel Ivison from Seaton, with Jessica Taylor, 15, as Jasmine. The genie is played by Adam MacCreedy. Craig Norendal, 14, from Workington plays Jaffar the scribe and 15-year-old Thom Chicken, 15, from Workington is Iago.
The scripts for the musical were handed out last summer, but rehearsals did not start until October.
Since Christmas rehearsals have been held three times a week for the youngsters – aged between nine and 16 – to practice their performances. Costumes for the characters have been hired from Northern Costume Hire in Lancashire.
One of the organisers Carolyn Westnedge, said that the youngsters are all excited for the performance.
She added that anybody who enjoyed the 1992 Disney film, should watch the musical.
“It is entertaining, funny, and fast-moving,” she said.
Rehearsals have been taking place in the society’s headquarters in Queen Street Hall in Workington, which is available to hire by calling 01900 603050.
To buy the £6 tickets for the musical, call the Carnegie Theatre ticket office on 01900 602122 or call into the office in the Carnegie Arts Theatre which is next door to the theatre, between 9am and 8pm.
