Workington speedway's Richard Lawson happy to be in winning routine

Workington Comets’ Richard Lawson believes a new Saturday morning regime has helped him to score big points at home.

Lawson feels he is riding well at the moment and took three victories and 10 points from five rides against Somerset at the weekend and feels his recent performances at home are where he expects to be.

He said: “I am going out riding each week on a Saturday morning just to loosen myself up before a home meeting.

“It seems to be going pretty well at the moment so I will continue doing it and hope for more of the same.

“The scores I have been getting at home recently is what I expect but it is always nice to get into double figures which is what I managed to do on Saturday.

“At the moment I am just taking one meeting at a time but the scores are good, the bike is working well and everything seems to be going all right at the moment.”

Lawson has struggled slightly away from home but has been self critical of his own performances saying he is not making excuses for his poor scores away from home.

He said: “I have been getting a bit frustrated with my away performances because I know I can do better.

“I am just not being consistent enough and been making bad starts so if I can improve that aspect the scores should pick up.

“I am not making excuses and I cannot really use the reason any more that I am too inexperienced.”

The Comets have only raced three times in the last three weeks something which Lawson said he is not a particular fan of.

However, he has been filling in for other teams as a guest picking up a paid nine points for second placed Birmingham on Sunday against Glasgow.

He said: “I prefer to keep going and have two or three meetings a week, especially the way I am riding at the moment when my machinery is working well and I am staying injury free.”

Meanwhile, Comets owner Keith Denham has announced that children will go free to all home matches when accompanied by an adult for the rest of the season.

The Comets ran the scheme as a trial last week and Denham said it was a success so has decided to keep the scheme for the rest of the season.
