Workington Town and Whitehaven set for fund-raising cricket derby

Rugby league fans who thought they had seen the last of the local Workington Town v Whitehaven derbies this season are in for a treat.
But this time the two sides will be locking horns with the willow rather than the rugby ball.
Town and Haven will be taking to the cricket field at Workington CC on Friday, August 6 (6pm start) to raise funds for Town’s Neil Frazer. Frazer has played for both clubs in his 10-year pro career and is currently in his testimonial period.
Town coach Garry Charlton will skipper the Workington side, his Haven counterpart Ged Stokes taking charge of the Haven team. Both teams are permitted two guest players.
“It’s going to be great fun and for a very good cause,” said Charlton, who used to play for Whitehaven CC in the North Lancs Cumbria League 25 years ago.
“It’s all about enjoyment than serious stuff although I am sure the lads will want to win. And any money raised will all be for a very good cause.”
Haven boss Stokes added: “We’re delighted to be involved in the event. I’ve been friends with Neil’s family since I coached at Town and I have a lot of respect for Neil both as a person and a player.
“I am very pleased to be able to help raise some money for his well-deserved testimonial.”
Organisers have ruled that the Haven side will not involve Stoke’s Durham CC pro son Ben and his father added: “Ben isn’t in our plans. He’ll hopefully be playing for Durham at Hampshire on that day.”
Entry to the event will be £2 for adults and £1 for concessions and under-16s, which will include a raffle ticket for a special prize. Another raffle will be held during the evening and there will be snacks available. The bar will also be open.
- Bookings are still being taken for the Neil Frazer Testimonial Golf Day, at Maryport Golf Club, on Friday, August 20. The entry cost for a team of four is £120 for which the members will receive a round of golf and soup and sandwiches. There will be a straightest drive competition and a nearest the pin competition as well as a raffle on the day. For further details, to enter a team (tee-off times bookable from 9am until 1pm) or to sponsor a hole at £50 a hole, contact Tony on 07510 913513.
- A race night is being held at the Travellers Rest next Friday evening (first race 8pm). There is no entry fee on the night but those attending will be able to have a bet on the horses. There is also a special tri-cast competition that people can enter with a chance of winning £100.
